Ive been into pinback for just over a year now.. mostly just repeatedly listening to their first LP.. I recently updated and rounded out my collection with their other LPs and downloaded the EPs. I was soooo excited about this concert because I cant even remember the last time i went to a show where i knew all the songs and could sing along. I haven't felt this obsessed with a band for 10 years or so (high school).
I was standing dead centre, really close to the stage. Before they played they came out and set up their stuff they taped up their set lists and one was hanging right off the keyboard in front of me and through the white paper i could read most of the song titles! i knew before they even started that they would play penelope and then prog right before the encore.
when they came out and started playing BOO i was impressed by their down to earthness.. they seemed shy and deliciously geeky. rob was the only one who spoke at all and when he did he was pretty nervous and adorable (he even called himself a big dork). it was so neat to see rob and zach harmonize and play off of eachother live (because their voices are so similar i sometimes wonder who does what on the recordings). as a pleasant aside, i found zach and the dude playing samples/guitar to be quite attractive, indeed.
as they got further into their awesome set i was completely taken away with them. i got more of a sense of where they're from - san diego.. a lot of their imagery is of water and they have this surf rock kind of feel. i was bopping my head enthusiastically and hopping on my toes the whole time, riding the waves with them, completely enveloped.
the sound was less than perfect (but pretty good) and one thing i missed was rob's deep velvety voice. it just couldnt be heard over the noise so he sang an octave above for his lower parts, usually (perhaps because he was still a bit sick?)
penelope sure was played faster than the recording..
after they finished their 2 song encore (during which 'the advantage' took the stage with them, somewhat awkwardly) i squeezed in past a couple people and reached for the set list, written on the back of a bass string package, that i was looking at during the show. the bass player, ever so kindly, handed it to me and i thanked him.

encore written beneath that : "X.I.Y. CRUTCH? MAN/TRAIN??"
wtf neil hamburger?
us canadians are way too polite... i know his schtick is that he's the worst and he is begging to be booed and heckled but we just sort of hummed and hawed and chuckled. someone threw a cotton ball. that's as rude as we get - shame, shame.it was a painful hour (?), needless to say.
